The Oregon SAE/SANE Certification Commission was established by the Attorney General in 2004. Oregon is one of only seven states that offer state-level SAE/SANE certification.
Oregon certification provides nurses with information about the specifics of the SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Exam) Kit used throughout Oregon and requires participation in a minimum number of precepted exams to demonstrate competency, which is not a requirement of the International Association of Forensic Nurses certification.
Additionally, Oregon certification fosters local collaboration by requiring non-clinical contact with community partners, including time spent with the local District Attorney and advocacy program, ride-alongs with local law enforcement, and a visit to the state crime lab.
The Oregon SAE/SANE Certification Commission reviews certification applications for competency, consistency and accuracy, and provides feedback and support to nurses working to obtain their Oregon SAE/SANE certification.
